My baby is going to school!

Posted January 27th, 2010 by candi

Willow’s first day of Reception is tomorrow. I can barely believe that I am the mother of a five year old now, let alone a school girl!

She woke me up this morning wearing her bathers (one piece and a bit small, so not easy to get on!) and told us that she wanted to go swimming today. They do an intensive class later in Term One, so I placated her with that.

It’s actually not such a big adjustment as she went to the ELC there last year. Still, people keep asking her/me if she is going to school now that she is five, so clearly it is an important milestone. I’ve organised to take the day off work, so I can take her to school. Usually she goes with A, who works at the school, so having me drop her off will be a real treat!

As I was doing some sewing earlier, I thought back to not only her birth, but the time she spent in hospital as a baby. She had a choledochal cyst – on her gall bladder – which needed to be removed by surgery at 7 weeks of age. How far she has come from those early days in a metal cot, with a drip trailing from her. It probably wouldn’t surprise anyone who knows her that she actually pulled the drip out at one point. She was nearly due to have it out so the nurses just left it.

I hope that her tenaciousness will serve her well in the future.

I hope she is having a wonderful time! Finn is now in Grade 1, which I also find hard to believe. Mine are loving school and all of the extra-curricular stuff too. Finding my pettiskirt stash very handy for little girl birthday parties. It is school age where you really notice that your kids’ social lives have become way more busy than your own.

The first year of school is wonderful, watching them learn and develop at such an astounding rate…
