You talkin’ to me?

A lovely friend gave me a voucher for Quickflix, the concept is that you can choose the videos you want to watch – they recommend starting with a queue of ten plus – and they will send them out to you. The voucher I got entitled me to 2 at a time and a maximum of 8 per month.

The first two movies I got were My Sister’s Keeper and Taxi Driver. I watched My Sister’s Keeper before we went away and tonight I watched Taxi Driver.

Yesterday I received an email to say that since I’d returned My Sister’s Keeper, The Pursuit of Happiness was on it’s way.

Taxi Driver was unsettling, like watching a long drawn out car crash. The cultural references were good and it was funny to see a young Cybil Shepherd and Jodie Foster. A and I like racing to spot less well known actors and I spotted Peter Boyle, who was the father in Everybody Loves Raymond. The direction and cinematography reminded me of Quentin Tarantino.

My Sister’s Keeper – well, I laughed when I got these two movies in the post. Total opposites. My Sister’s Keeper was based on a book that I haven’t read yet, but now I want to. The main focus was the relationships between the characters. Between the mother and father as well as between the siblings and their parents. Watching this movie made me wonder how A and I would cope in the same situation. Hopefully I would not be so dogmatic as the mother. I’d like to think that our relationship would survive the illness and eventual loss of a child. The financial pressures might make it a bit wobbly, but I’d like to think that we’d be ok. That above all, our love for each other and our children would hold us together.

The Pursuit of Happyness left me in a funk for weeks. Broke my heart (not giving away an ending here – for the most part it’s a sad movie).

I found my Sister’s keeper really hard to watch. I think it’s the mother in me that just doesn’t want any of her babies to get sick and die! :( Not to mention the ending is not the same as the book! :S

I LOVED the book of My Sister’s Keeper, but I have so far avoided the movie because I heard that they changed the ending TOTALLY! I really loved the twist in the book’s ending, so am a bit annoyed that they went with the predictable ending in the movie.

That said, I’ll probably still try to see it one day. :-)
