My Sister’s Keeper
After watching the movie My Sister’s Keeper, I was keen to read the book. Fortunately for me, I visited a friend who had a copy of the book which I promptly borrowed. Last night I got through about 100 pages and today I finished it. Usually I read a book and then see a movie. Doing it the other way around was strange – I actually preferred the movie to the book. I could hear Cameron Diaz speaking when I read the part by Sara. Jodi Piccoult has a certain style of writing that is very flowery and descriptive. I’ve read a few of her later books and found her style quite predictable.
I really didn’t like the ending of the book, I much prefer the ending in the movie. The development of the extra characters (like Julia and her sister) in the book was interesting but I can see how there wasn’t enough time in the movie to do that. Jesse, the brother was explained much more – the movie just hinted at his character and motivation.
There was one quote from the book that I particularly liked, from Shakespeare’s Hamlet.
Doubt thou that the stars are fire;
Doubt thou that the sun doth move;
Doubt truth to be a liar;
But never doubt that I love.
