My grandfather…
My Nanna rang tonight, I had been expecting a call about the family reunion we attend every year. Unfortunately it looks like we won’t be going because Poppa will be in hospital. It seems he will need to have an operation as his prostate is impacting on his urethra, which means he can’t pee. He currently has a catheter in and has been released from the country hospital of his hometown. Because of his age and frailty, they are not willing to risk doing the operation there, so he will need to come up to the big scary city to have it done.
Of course, his operation is scheduled at the hospital across town, not either of the hospitals within 15-20 minutes drive from here. This means that they might stay here initially then when Poppa is admitted, Nanna will go stay in accommodation across the road from the hospital. They are not sure when the operation will be scheduled. They will probably have to get the Red Cross to transport them up here, but I said that if it was on a weekend, then I would drive them up or back. It is about a four hour drive one way, so it would take a day.
Considering they thought he was too frail to have his gall-bladder removed, I hope the anesthetist takes good care of him! One of the doctors spoke to Nanna about what would happen when she could no longer care for Poppa. It is exhausting for her, but she started to cry when she told me. He has always been such a strong man, frustrated by the impact that old age has on his life. I suspected that once he lost his licence, he wouldn’t stick around for long. The doctor also mentioned tablets that would help with Poppa’s dementia, but that horse has bolted, I reckon. Mum thought he had Dementia and she died seven years ago this May.

I hope he’s ok, C. I know how much he means to you. My thoughts and best wishes to him, your Nana, and of course you.
