Christmas

Willow was so excited to see her stocking – it contained little bits and pieces we bought from the Windmill shop. They included a ribbon stick, a glitter stick, a fishing set, some toy cars, some folding binoculars, squirty creatures for the bath. I brought Dexter out from his room and after unpacking her stocking, she kindly helped him unpack his too.

A finally staggered up from the bedroom to watch them open their official presents. They had 4 each, including new clothes to wear the next day. Willow got a game for her computer, a green and pink dress, and a Hungry Caterpillar puzzle. Dexie got a pop and push Thomas, a Little People bull dozer, a shirt, tshirt and shorts set. Willow gave Dexie an Iggle Piggle and he gave her an Upsie Daisie. So much for my desire to avoid commercial toys – the look on Dexie’s face was worth it though.

A made bacon and egg bagels for breakfast, which I had with a nice strong coffee.

Then it was time for me to start cooking. I got the chicken in the oven, made a practice pavlova, prepared the vegetables for roasting and was just frying the prawns in garlic and butter when my chest started to get tight and my back started spasming. The pain was worth than labour and no gorgeous baby at the end of it! I moved around, laid on the floor, draped myself over the fit ball, laid in bed, paced around, got A to give me a massage, but nothing worked. I took some Panadeine 15, some Advil but I might as well have thrown back some lollies for all the good they did.

I called a locum doctor (on Christmas Day, would love to know what he was getting paid!) who gave me a script for Brufen, Panadeine Forte and Valium. The next problem was finding out if any chemists were open on Christmas Day. As I’d expected, the Midnight Pharmacy on Hindley St was, so I was just about to get in the car when something popped and I started to feel better. By the time we got there and got the medication, I didn’t really need it.

At least I have it now, although I would hesitate before taking the Valium considering I’m breastfeeding Dexter. I spoke to my SIL, who is a pharmacist – she agreed with my plan of taking a smaller dose directly after a breast feed and waiting 12 hours before feeding again.

So after all that, Christmas Day was a bit of a fizzer. I didn’t really feel like eating and Christmas is mostly about the food for me.

I’ve had that back pain before, the one that radiates through my chest and makes me wonder (though I remind myself every time that this is coming from my back) if I’m actually having a heart attack.

Glad yours settled, Candi. I’ve popped Mersyndol and Nurofen Plus (though I can see how the Valium might be useful) and never had any success. Usually takes a couple of days to subside.
