The hundred dollar handbag, or how to spend too much at the fabric shop.
About a month ago I decided that I was bored with my current hand bag and wanted to make another one. I love Amy Butler’s patterns, so I thought I’d pop into the fabric shop near A’s work. They have stocked Amy Butler patterns in the past, so I was pleased to see the Betty Shopper pattern there. The pattern, Amy Butler fabric, thread, interfacing, eyelets and eyelet setter cost nearly $100.00 so there goes my justification of being able to buy an expensive hand bag after I’m bored with this one. A said I’d better not get bored with this one for a long time!
So, I’ve cut the pattern out, cut the fabric out, now I need to sew it up…
Er, except I can’t find the sewing machine cord!
Update: I found the sewing machine cord, once I’d left the room I was tearing apart to find it, did something else for awhile, walked back in and spotted it immediately.
I’ve now finished the body of the bag, I still have the eyelets to do. I’ll practice first though – I’d hate to sew the whole thing only to mess it up now.
Now that I have got the sewing machine out, I want to sew more! I found this in my travels today.
Willow seems to think that wearing a skirt makes her a ballerina, so I think she’ll like it.
While getting my sewing machine out, I realised just how much sewing and craft stuff I have. I am going to put together a surprise package for a friend. Anyone else want one?
Update again. Well, that didn’t work. The eyelet went straight through the material, leaving a very neat circular hole in my bag. Hmmm… I think that I might unpick the top seam an attach an over the shoulder handle like I wanted in the first place. I have decided to cut the bag down so that will get rid of the hole as neat and cute as it is.

The top of the bag. The stitching was dreadful anyway – that’s what I get for trying to sew when Dexter and Willow are at my feet. You can’t see the hole very well.

Now you can see the hole! Those scissors were my mothers, they are fantastic for cutting fabric.

The new handle with the mobile phone pocket.

The finished product. I tested it today when we went Xmas shopping – it is probably a bit bigger than it needs to be, plus my mobile fell out of the pocket a few times, but apart from that it was great.

I’m not quite sure what to do about the pocket, I’m thinking some kind of flap with a press stud?
