Sad things.

I am currently working in a health centre for homeless youth. We are a multi-disciplinary team, a doctor, two nurses, drug and alcohol counsellors, social workers, community workers, out reach workers. We provide, amongst other services, social assistance – food and toiletries. We also run a clean needle program.

You know, I thought I’d heard and seen some really sad things when I worked in the disability sector. And I have. Some really fucking awful things. Things that you think just don’t happen, but they do. In a split second, a person’s life changes forever.

The really sad thing about where I’m working now is that most of the kids never even had a chance. Almost all of them have been sexually abused as children, they come from broken homes, homes that were never whole in the first place.

Things that we take for granted, like food, a roof over our heads, a warm bed at night, love and support – they don’t have this. There is just so much they don’t have.
